Beetle Update – RIP

Well, the beetle guy e-mailed be this morning and told me that his mom won’t let him drive all the down here. Gee, he could have told me this TWO MONTHS AGO.

But, I’ve moved on.

To this. Maybe. It definately looks like ass, but with a paint job and some seat covers it would definately be nicer. They have new fenders that they’re throwing in with it. The catch is, they’re asking $1500 for it. (Yeah friggin’ right!) If I can get it from them for $500 I’ll take it. I don’t see people lining up for it, so I’ll see what happens. I figure at the very worst, if I don’t do anything constructive with it after a few months I’ll sell it for whatever I bought it for. I talked to the mechanic, he said at $500-$600 it would be a good deal It’s got a new engine, a new clutch, new transmission, new carb, etc… But the guy took $800-$1000 off the cars value when he decided to paint it like that.

So what do you think? (I already know what you’re going to say, Gina!)

  1. I’m sorry, if you put 4 engines in a car and it was still giving you problems, chances are whoever was working on your car didn’t know what they were doing. Why 4 engines? A aircooled engine only needs to rebuild every 80,000 miles. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to figure out that the engine wasn’t the problem there.

  2. Hey…If the guy is gonna give you $500 to TAKE it…DO IT!! Otherwise leave it the heck alone. I had one of them, and it took 4 engines, and 2 transaxles to finally figure out…they ain’t worth a crap!!

  3. Waitaminute! You said it has a new engine, clutch & trans. Now we’re talking! These old VWs are pretty easy to work on. Sounds like the major stuff is out of the way.

  4. $550 is about right. This is not a new car anymore for chrissake! It is not even an old car! It is a *very* old car! I guess the upside is that it can only get nicer. Right now it looks like a mopey red-headed stepchild that got mauled by the family dog. These cars have so much character.
