On a related note, the patent for GIF files expired last friday. Finally. I remember a huge stink being made a few years ago when Unisys forced a lot of graphics software authors to pay up, or drop support for creating GIFs.

It is definitely pronounced like JIF soft G sound. I happend to run into the inventer of the GIF file this weekend. His name is Steve Wilhite and we worked together at CompuServe when he created the gif. I mentioned the pronunciation argument and he says he hears about it all the time.
